How to Use Binaural Beats to Make Up for Lost Sleep

What are binaural beats?

Binaural beats are an auditory illusion. When you listen to two tones, each at a different frequency and each in a different ear, your brain creates an additional tone. This third tone is called a binaural beat, and you hear it at the frequency difference between the two tones.

How do binaural beats work?

Binaural beats produce a frequency-following effect. This effect allows your brain activity to mimic the frequency set by the frequency of the beat, in turn, entraining your mind to reach different mental states.

There are five different frequency patterns and each are linked to different health benefits:

How can you use binaural beats to make up for lost sleep?

After a not-so-great night of sleep, Nucalm is my go-to for binaural signal processing. I simply put on an eye mask, pop in some headphones, turn my phone on airplane mode, and play the “Recharge” option in NuCalm’s app. This locks me into a deep state of relaxation and recovery, while simultaneously adding “deep sleep” points to my Oura ring readiness score all in a matter of just 20 minutes! Pretty amazing, right?!
